I am from Spain and last summer I made one of the best decisions of my life , I always wanted to go for a volunteer abroad since I was very young, and, last summer I finally did it, which ended to be the best volunteer travel I have ever had.
I went for two weeks and stayed in a house with other 50 volunteers, which was a challenge for me since I am a person who needs her own space, and sometimes I did feel a bit overwhelmed, however, that is the way it goes if you take the chance. We ate typical moroccan food: cous-cous, tallin, lamb, saladas… which were absolutely delicious and very healthy. In order to organize the meals for so many people, we set up groups, and each day a different group managed to serve the food and clean the dishes.
My task in the school was to teach english to a 30 kids class over 12 to 17 years old. They were all very warm and were always ready to follow the class. We had very funny moments and I still remember most of their faces and names. The school was opened three hours in the morning, including classes, music and the breaktime. In the afternoons we had to clean up the school so as paint it. And we also received arabic lessons from one of our instructors as well as the lyrics of a very popular song which we all sang during the days.
Our instructors provided us the volunteer opportunity to show us moroccan real life. Our first excursion was to some ruins up in the mountains. The second was to the imposing Merzouga’s desert that was incredible, I felt like if I was in a Dalí’s picture or in Mars. We set our journey inside the deep desert riding camels, and slept in the middle of the dunes with bereber’s company who played african music for us. We also stayed in a very special hotel for a few hours in where we could swim in the pool and eat plenty of tasty food. We past by Errachidia, and entered into the Zoco, which was huge and full of curious articles and food and spices. It was quite funny to haggling with the sellers.
I went to volunteer in Morocco by my own, without knowing what was going to happen, how many people I would meet. But everything worked like it had to and this experience helped me to grow my personal thoughts, it helped to open my mind and my heart and to realise what is really important in life. During those two weeks I felt like I was helping the world to improve. So I recommend this volunteer project abroad to every human being because, for sure, you will never regret such an expérience.
